Gigtern Spotlight: Evelyn Cruz

Meet Evelyn Cruz, our Programs Team spring gigtern and a senior at California State Polytechnic University of Pomona. Learn more about her Music Forward story below.

As a first-generation college student, I have repeatedly felt lost about how to achieve a successful career in music. It took me a while to learn that one could even study music business in college. Upon looking for internships, I stumbled across Music Forward’s Career Development workshops. That’s where things really began to take off. While attending the virtual series, everyone’s welcoming attitude helped me feel less intimidated by the music industry. A few months later, I applied to Music Forward’s internship program. The feeling that I could actually do this grew exponentially.

Throughout my internship, my favorite projects have included working on the Career Development workshops and providing day-of support during Music Forward’s Live @ The Echo and All Access Fest: Live @ the Hollywood Palladium. I have had so much fun meeting both aspiring professionals and established professionals happy to lend their expertise.

This has been the most supported I have felt in my music career. I have felt the love everyone puts into their work. Interning with Music Forward has made me feel increasingly optimistic about the future of the music industry. From seeing Music Forward staff dancing and celebrating artist participants to taking a genuine interest in aspiring professionals, my favorite part of this internship has been working with people who care so deeply about championing young people’s success.

This summer, I will be graduating from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Music Industry Studies. Currently, my friends and I are working on THEDRAMAFEST – a music festival coming June 30th to The Haven Pomona! As I continue my music journey, I aim to continue being a part of creating memorable experiences that support rising artists and other aspiring music professionals.

A special thanks to Katrina and Nia for their constant support!
